Most rest stops there had little more than a restroom and a few picnic tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In Japan, however, highway rest stops are completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Japanese service areas and parking areas often feel more like small theme parks than simple rest stops. But on clear days, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay from the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Seeing a Ferris wheel at a highway rest stop is definitely something unique to Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Parking Area with a Foot Bath<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"2160\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 3840 \/ 2160;\" width=\"3840\" controls src=\"https:\/\/twocountrylife.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_4599-2.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Another memorable stop was Ashigara Service Area on the Tomei Expressway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This service area offers a foot bath and even hot spring facilities, designed to help drivers relax after long hours on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While our car was charging, we decided to try the foot bath. One section contains \u201cDoctor Fish,\u201d small fish that gently nibble away dead skin from your feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It was my first time experiencing it, and the sensation was unlike anything I had ever felt before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Service Areas Have Evolved Over Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Interestingly, Japanese service areas were not always this impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Twenty or thirty years ago, they were much simpler places mainly used for restroom breaks and quick meals.
